A lot of references are made to ‘Aung San’ in Yangon.
From the iconic downtown market, to buildings and street names. But who was he?
Bogyoke Aung San was a Politician and the 5th serving Premier of Burma from 1946 to 1947. He is considered the ‘Father of the nation’ of modern-day Myanmar. He was assassinated in 1947. His daughter is Aung San Su Kyi, the State Counsellor (similar to Prime Minister) of Myanmar, and a leader of the National League for Democracy. She was famously detained under house arrest from 1989 to 2010, and was one of the world’s most prominent political prisoners. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. There are many critics of her ‘inaction’ to the persecution of the Rohingya people in Rakhine State. She has allegedly refused to acknowledge Myanmar’s past atrocities and massacres. Most people we spoke to though, speak highly of her.
